Custom nursery and kids room murals are a beautiful way to create a calm, personalized space that feels more custom than wallpaper or decals. In Minnesota homes, hand-painted nursery murals help create rooms that feel cozy, meaningful, and designed specifically for your family.

Across Prior Lake, Savage, and the south Twin Cities metro, most of my nursery mural projects range from $800 to $4,000, depending on wall size, design complexity, and prep work.

Why Nursery Murals Are Trending in Minnesota Homes

Nursery mural ideas have shifted a lot over the years. Most families are no longer looking for bold cartoon walls or overly themed rooms.

What I see now, especially in Minnesota homes, is a move toward softer and more timeless designs. Parents want something that feels peaceful during those early months, but still works as their child grows.

Murals offer a few things that are hard to get any other way:

  • A custom focal point designed for your exact space
  • A more elevated look than decals or peel-and-stick wallpaper
  • The ability to match the rest of your home, not just the nursery

In many cases, a mural is what takes a room from feeling unfinished to feeling complete.

Nursery Mural Ideas That Work in Real Homes

Every mural I paint is custom, but there are a few styles that consistently work well for families in the Twin Cities area:

Mountains and Forest Designs

This style works well for both nurseries and older kids rooms. It can go either direction depending on the space. I have done softer, layered versions that feel calm and subtle, but I have also done bolder designs with higher contrast and deeper colors when clients want more of a statement wall. Either way, it is a style that grows well with the room and still feels intentional as everything else changes.

Whimsical Details

Clouds, stars, trees, trains, a fence, or any other small hand-painted elements you can think of.

A little detail goes a long way. The goal is to add personality without overwhelming the space. This approach works especially well in nurseries where you want a touch of character without making the design feel too busy or overstimulating.

Abstract and Textural Walls

Movement, arches, or color blocking that adds interest without a specific theme.

These are a great option if you want something unique that still ties into the rest of your home. I often design these to match nearby rooms so everything feels cohesive, especially in open floor plans or homes where the nursery is close to main living spaces. They also tend to age really well since they are not tied to a specific theme or stage, which makes them a good long-term choice.

Wooden Accent Walls

As much as I love painting murals, they are not always the best choice for every space. In some homes, especially if you are looking for something more subtle or longer-term, a wooden accent wall can be a better fit. Wood adds warmth, texture, and a custom feel without being as design-specific as a mural. It also tends to blend more easily with the rest of your home as your style or your child’s room evolves.

I have worked with clients in the Twin Cities area who start out thinking they want a mural, but after talking through the space, layout, and overall look, we end up going with a wooden accent wall instead.

Kids Room Mural Cost: What to Expect

Most custom nursery and kids room murals I complete in the Prior Lake and Savage area fall between $800 and $4,000.

The final cost depends on a few key factors:

  • Size of the wall or room
  • Complexity of the design
  • Amount of prep work needed
  • Number of colors and layers
  • Level of customization

A simple, clean design on a well-prepped wall will be on the lower end. A more detailed mural with multiple layers and custom elements will require more time and fall on the higher end. I always explain pricing clearly so you know exactly what you are getting. This includes design planning, prep work, protection of your space, and a finished result that is meant to last.

What To Expect If We Work Together

1. Design and planning – We start with your ideas. Some clients come with a full Pinterest board, and others just have a general direction. I help turn that into a design that fits your wall, your lighting, and your overall home style.

2. Layout and sketching – Before painting begins, I map out the design so you can visualize how it will look in your space. This step makes a big difference in getting the proportions and balance right.

3. Prep work – Proper prep is what makes the final result look clean and professional. I take care of protecting floors, trim, and furniture, filling holes or imperfections, and sanding rough areas.

4. Painting – Finally the fun part! Most murals take between two and three days depending on the size and detail. I will sketch things in chalk first so we can make adjustments, and check in throughout the process to make sure you’re happy with the design.
