Interior painting cost in Savage, Prior Lake, and the Twin Cities metro area can vary quite a bit depending on the size of the room, how much prep work is needed, and how many spaces you want painted at once. Most projects I take on start at $600, with many single rooms falling in the $600 to $1,200 range. In this guide, I’ll break down typical interior painting costs, what affects pricing, and what you can expect when budgeting for your home.
First: My Minimum Project Price Is $600
I mention this clearly because it helps set realistic expectations. Even for a smaller room, there is still a base amount of time built into every job:
- Drive time.
- Unloading materials.
- Protecting floors and furniture.
- Patching and wall prep.
- Painting.
- Cleanup.
While some projects may look small at first glance, they still take a meaningful amount of time to do properly. That is why my minimum is $600, and why none of my quotes come in below that. For the right smaller project, that can still make perfect sense. I just want homeowners to have that number in mind from the beginning. It’s also why sometimes it makes sense to have multiple rooms painted at once instead of one by one. More on that below.
Average Interior Painting Costs in Savage, Prior Lake & Nearby Areas
For most homes in Savage, Prior Lake, Lakeville, Burnsville, and nearby south metro communities, these are reasonable general ranges for interior wall painting in 2026:
- Bedroom/Office/Living Room: $600 – $900. These usually have two doorways and one or two windows. Larger rooms or lots of edges will push the estimate into the higher end of the range.
- Kitchen + Dining Area: $600 – $1,200. These generally have a lot of cutting in around cabinets and tough to reach spaces. Estimates will vary widely depending on your unique space.
- Bathroom: $600 – $700. While smaller, bathrooms often have a lot of tough to reach spaces and extra care is required working around toilets, mirrors, tubs, and showers.
Note: Painting multiple rooms at once will be less expensive than the sum of each room individually. That’s mainly because of the ability to paint another space while one room dries between coats, but also because of less drive time and material moving.
What Affects Interior Painting Cost the Most?
The four main factors to cost are prep work, room size/layout, ease of access, and color coverage:
1. How Much Prep Work is Required?
Prep is one of the biggest factors in both price and final quality. A lot of the finished result comes from what happens before the last coat of paint ever goes on. Before I paint, I handle things like filling nail holes, patching minor wall damage, sanding rough areas, caulking where needed, and protecting the surrounding space. That is important. A room can be the same size as another, but if the walls are beat up or uneven, it will take more time to get a smooth, finished result.
2. What is the Room Size and Layout?
Larger rooms naturally take more time, but layout matters too. A simple, square bedroom is usually pretty straightforward. An open-concept living area with long walls, multiple openings, and a lot of cut-in work takes more time and attention and will increase the estimate.
3. What Am I Working Around?
Tight spaces, like kitchens or bathrooms with immovable toilets take extra time to paint properly. In other rooms, empty is faster and easier. Fully furnished rooms add labor because there is more to cover and work around carefully. I do ask my customers to move furniture a few feet from all walls before I arrive. Part of doing the job professionally is protecting the home while I work, and that extra care is part of the overall cost.
4. What Colors Are Being Painted?
Some color changes are simple, and some are not. If you are going from a darker color to a much lighter one, or using certain whites, it can take extra coats to get even coverage. That adds time and materials, which affects the final estimate.
What I Paint — and What I Usually Don’t
I focus mainly on interior wall painting in standard-height spaces. In most cases, I do not paint trim or ceilings, except in rare situations where it’s part of a larger project, or essential, such as a mural that runs onto the ceiling.
For safety reasons, I also do not paint:
- Walls over 10 feet tall.
- Vaulted stairways.
- Other interior spaces that require working at unsafe heights.
I like to be clear about that up front. It helps homeowners know whether I’m the right fit, and it lets me stay focused on the work I do best.
